In the spring, when temperatures are consistently above 45 degrees F, the pond filtration system needs to be started up and checked for leaks and proper rate flow. As the temperatures increase, algae and other water weeds can begin to grow and spread throughout the pond.

Two of the most common types of aquatic weeds in the Treasure Valley are milfoil and water willows, and are aggressive spreading weeds. Without treatment, they could clog irrigation intake pipes, cause a pump to burn out, hinder power generation, and can take over the ecosystem in your pond. Milfoil and water willows can be treated will specialty aquatic applications. During the Spring, Summer, and Fall the pond or water feature filtration system should be cleaned monthly, and sometimes more frequently depending on debris.

In the fall, it is important to remove all organic material, leaves, and all other debris from the pond or water feature to maintain the integrity of the ponds pumping station and filtration system. When temperatures drop below 45 degrees F, the pumping station needs to be shut down, and the pump and filtration system should be removed, drained, and put away for storage to prevent damage from freezing. In some situations a water feature may be acceptable to run during the winter months if the vault that contains the pump and filtration system is deep enough to avoid freezing.
